Cane, Sticks and Walkers

Canes and sticks are mobility aids that people can lean on for more support when moving around. Some versions incorporate features such as folding for easy storage, and technology such as torchlight, radio and even fall detection.

Walkers are frames which provide better stability, and hence provide more safety compared to canes and sticks.

Wheelchairs, Electric/ Motorised Scooters

There are two types of wheelchairs: manual wheelchairs that are propelled by hand, and power wheelchairs that are propelled by a motor.

Power wheelchairs may have additional features to recline, tilt and/or elevate the seat, and additional features such as climbing stairs or standing.

Electric scooters are generally more suitable for persons who can ambulate short distances. Four-wheeled scooters are generally more stable but have less leg room and lower manoeuvrability compared to three-wheeled scooters.

Ramps for wheelchair users can be permanent or portable.

In Singapore, the deployment of a ramp should meet the guidelines of the Building Construction Authority (BCA) for the landing run, gradient, width, surface, handrails and edge protection.

Alternative Keyboards and Mice

Keyboards and mice come in various sizes, colours, layouts and input methods to allow persons with different disabilities to access computers and smart devices.

Depending on their needs, persons with disabilities can choose an appropriate keyboard or mouse to overcome their challenges in accessing the computer. For instance, some keyboards allow rearrangement of keys to make it easier for persons with intellectual disability to use.
